The Aboriginal Medical Student (SoMF) Scholarship (Scholarship) is funded from donations to the School of Medicine
Fremantle (SoMF) at The University of Notre Dame Australia (University). The Scholarship is administered in
accordance with the following conditions:
- NAME OF SCHOLARSHIP
The Aboriginal Medical Student (SoMF) Scholarship. - PURPOSE OF SCHOLARSHIP
The purpose of the Scholarship is to provide financial support to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students
enrolled in the Doctor of Medicine (MD) in the School of Medicine, Fremantle Campus. - VALUE OF SCHOLARSHIP
The number and value of scholarships awarded each year will be at the discretion of the Selection Committee. - ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS
To be eligible for the Scholarship, applicants must:
a) Be an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander person and state that he/she identifies as an Aboriginal or Torres
Strait Islander person and is recognised by his/her community as an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander
person;
b) Be enrolled as a full-time student at The University of Notre Dame Australia in the School of Medicine,
Fremantle;
c) Be able to demonstrate satisfactory academic achievement throughout the year in which the Scholarship
is awarded; and
d) Be able to demonstrate the circumstances set out in the Selection Criteria. - SELECTION COMMITTEE
The Selection Committee for the Scholarship will comprise:
a) The Dean of the School of Medicine, Fremantle (or nominee);
b) The National Director, Indigenous Education (or nominee); and
c) The Associate Dean, Aboriginal Health, Fremantle (or nominee). - SELECTION CRITERIA
The Scholarship is awarded to the applicants who, in the opinion of the Selection Committee, best demonstrate
through their application and supporting documentation:
a) Personal circumstances which warrant special consideration;
b) Personal qualities and motivation, including personal determination to train and work as a medical
practitioner; and
c) Academic merit. - SELECTION PROCESS
a) The Scholarship will be advertised on the University website in the year preceding the award of the
Scholarship.
b) Written applications setting out compliance with the Eligibility Requirements and addressing the Selection
Criteria must be made on the application form available from the University website.
c) Applications will be submitted to the The University of Notre Dame Australia.
d) The Selection Committee may interview selected applicants.
e) The successful recipient will be notified in writing by the University.
f) If in any year there are no eligible students, the Scholarship will not be awarded.
Conditions of
The Aboriginal Medical
Student (SoMF) Scholarship
2 Conditions of The Aboriginal Medical Student (SoMF) Scholarship - DURATION OF SCHOLARSHIP
a) Subject to the conditions in Clause 11 below, the Scholarship will be tenable for the equivalent of one year
of studies in the School of Medicine, Fremantle.
b) The Scholarship is not transferable to another degree, University of Notre Dame Campus or any other
organisation or institution. - CONCURRENT AND REPEAT SCHOLARSHIPS
a) The Scholarship can be held in conjunction with another University scholarship.
b) Recipients of the Scholarship are eligible for repeat awards provided the Eligibility Requirements continue
to be met. Recipients must reapply each year. - METHOD OF PAYMENT
a) Scholarship funds will be paid directly to the student as determined by the University.
b) Recipients are required to complete a Gift Expenditure Form for payment of funds.
c) Scholarship funds will be paid in instalments, at the beginning of the semesters. The second payment will
be dependent on the student’s Satisfactory Academic Progress being confirmed by the School. - CONDITIONS OF CONTINUATION
The Scholarship will continue to be paid subject to the recipient:
a) Maintaining satisfactory performance each semester; and
b) Maintaining full time enrolment.
The recipient forfeits the Scholarship if they:
a) Fail to meet the requirement in a) and b) above;
b) Are found to have behaved in a manner that is in breach of the University’s Student Code of Conduct or
is the subject of disciplinary action under the University’s General Regulations;
c) Discontinue their degree in the School of Medicine;
d) Take a leave of absence; or
e) Defer their enrolment for a period greater than 12 months.
The exception to this is if the recipient makes an application in writing to the Dean of the School of Medicine,
outlining the circumstances and reasons relating to their personal situation. The Dean has discretion to
determine the ongoing status of the Scholarship. - STUDENT REQUIREMENTS
Scholarship recipients are required to:
a) Submit an end of year report to the School of Medicine, outlining their progress;
a. Reports should include academic results for the semester, an update regarding the circumstances
which warrant the recipient to be in receipt of the Scholarship, and other relevant feedback.
b. The School of Medicine will notify the Scholarship recipients of the report submission due dates.
c. Reports should be sent to the School of Medicine and a copy will be forwarded to the Office of
University Relations.
b) Participate in any publications, media and events related to the award of the Scholarship. - ADMINISTERING BODY
The Scholarship is administered by The University of Notre Dame Australia. - PRIVACY
The University is committed to the principles contained in the Privacy Act 1988 (Commonwealth) and the Privacy
Amendment (Private Sector) Act 2000 (Commonwealth) and will not disclose any personal information (as
defined in the Privacy Act) relating to this Scholarship to any third party without the written consent of the
applicant. - GENERAL PRINCIPLES
a) These Conditions must comply with any University Regulations regarding the awarding of scholarships and
prizes.
b) The Vice Chancellor, in consultation with the School of Medicine, may vary the Conditions of the
Scholarship at any time.
3 Conditions of The Aboriginal Medical Student (SoMF) Scholarship
Purpose:
The purpose of the Scholarship is to provide financial support to Aboriginal and Torres
Strait Islander students enrolled in the Doctor of Medicine (MD) in the School of
Medicine, Fremantle Campus.
