A temporary position as researcher (SKO 1109) is available at the Department of Literature, European Languages and Area Studies (ILOS), University of Oslo.
The position is funded by ERC (European Research Council) and forms part of the research project JEUX – Literary Games, Poetics and the Early-Modern Novel (101087560). JEUX investigates how literary authors model their own practice creatively through play. The project goes beyond traditional metaphors of literature as gameplay and investigates an actual literary game from theoretical, historical and empirical perspectives. To assess play as practice, JEUX will invite creative-writing students to play early-modern games and, thereby, pioneer a new methodological approach to explore cultural practices as a potential site for creativity, innovation and community also in the contemporary world.
More about the position
We invite applications for the position of Researcher in the project who will prepare, implement and analyse an empirical investigation of how today’s creative writing students play literary games. We seek applicants with experience in methods such as participatory observation, qualitative interviews and environmentally valid experimental designs.
In the application, the candidate is expected to submit 2 to 3 recent articles and to present a reflection paper on how the candidate would use their methods to investigate empirically a sample literary game [link]. The reflection paper should not exceed 2 pages, and also offer a perspective on how the results of the investigation could contribute to education in creative writing.
The position is available for a period of two and a half years.
The successful candidate is expected to become an active member of the project JEUX, to contribute to its overall development at project meetings, workshops and other events, as well as to disseminate project results. JEUX is linked to the interdisciplinary hub LCE (Literature, Cognition and Emotions).
Qualification requirements
- PhD or equivalent academic qualifications with a specialization in cultural anthropology, social anthropology, psychology, sociology, empirical literary studies or related fields.
Further requirements are:
- Excellent research track record; ideally with demonstrated research excellence (commensurate with career stage) in the last five years
- Experience with working across disciplines
- Fluent oral and written communication skills in English. Fluency in French will be an advantage
- Personal suitability and motivation for the position

- The research project’s scientific merit, research-related relevance and innovation
- The applicant’s estimated academic and personal ability to carry out the project within the allotted time frame and contribute to JEUX
- Good co-operative skills, and the ability to successfully join in academic collaboration within and across disciplines
- Experience with outreach activities
