Organizational Unit OverviewA research specialist/manager position in the Department of Integrative Physiology and Metabolism in the Brody School of Medicine at East Carolina University. The Department of Integrative Physiology and Metabolism is dedicated to the discovery, development, and promotion of biomedical knowledge involving basic and applied biomedical sciences with an emphasis on the study of cellular and molecular basis of tissue function. The research programs are focused on understanding the integrative mechanisms of physiological processes within the context of both health and disease. The investigators emphasize an integrative approach to biomedical science, with expertise in research methods for investigating cardiac function, pulmonary and vascular regulation, skeletal muscle biology, spinal cord injury, nerve regeneration, cancer, metabolism, and bioenergetics. Through this mission, we aim to improve human health through innovative educational programs and excellence in research and scholarly activities in a dynamic and diverse learning community. The duties for this position will occur primarily in the East Carolina Diabetes and Obesity Center (ECDOI) located in the East Carolina Heart Institute Building.East Carolina University is located in Greenville, North Carolina. Greenville is Eastern North Carolina’s cultural, educational, medical, and economic center. The Greenville/Pitt County area has a population of approximately 175,000 and is one hour from the Research Triangle to the west and the Crystal Coast to the east. East Carolina University (28,000 students) is part of a vibrant healthcare community including ECU Health, a level 1 trauma center, and a 1400+ bed health system serving more than 1.4 million people in 29 eastern North Carolina counties.
Job DutiesLaboratory workPerform research experiments under the direction of the principal investigator. This will include but is not limited to Western blots, RT-PCR, immunohistochemistry, ELISAs, cell culture, etc. (50%)Assist with animals including surgical procedures (e.g., castration and pelvic nerve injury surgeries, drug administration). (10%)Assist with tissue collection and processing, and be responsible for organization, storage, and proper labeling/identification of tissue and blood samples. (10%)Lab ManagementProvide supervision of technical staff and students in the laboratory (10%)Oversee laboratory inventories and maintenance of hazardous/chemical waste records and disposal as needed. (5%)Assist with supply and chemical orders and maintain order inventories. (5%)Data ManagementDevelop and maintain detailed records of experiments and report data in an organized fashion (tabular, oral, written, and/or graphic formats) to the principal investigator. (10%)
