Research Position (PhD candidate or Postdoc) for experimental studies on mental imagery, University of Bielefeld, Germany, Europe

Last Date: 22.02.2024.

At the Center for Cognitive Interaction Technology (CITEC), a Central Academic Institute of Bielefeld University, scientists from multiple faculties are involved in the interdisciplinary research and development of future intelligent systems and their interaction with humans in different environments. The CITEC research group “Neurocognition and Action” has a number of modern, well-equipped laboratories in areas such as motion capture (biomechanics, VICON), attention capture (eye-tracking) and recording of neurocognitive processes (EEG, memory). For the newly launched EU project “Performance in Robots Interaction via Mental Imagery” (PRIMI), the CITEC research group “Neurocognition and Action” is offering a research position as a PhD student or postdoctoral researcher. The overarching goal of the project is to enable the next generation of humanoid robots to achieve human-like performance based on new technologies. Mental simulation processes (mental training) are at the center of the project. In this context, experimental studies on neurocognitive processes, mental representations and movement concepts in humans (imagery) are required.

The position will be filled subject to project approval.

Your Tasks

Research tasks (100 %):

  • planning, implementation and evaluation of investigations of cognitive and neurophysiological processes in the imagination of movements (mental imagery) using suitable methods such as EEG (40 %)
  • empirical – experimental studies on action observation, shared mental representation and attentional focus in human interaction (e.g. rehabilitation after stroke) using eye-tracking and motion capture (30 %)
  • supporting clinical pilot studies with robots and humans in which robots are to guide the physical rehabilitation of stroke patients (10 %)
  • international and interdisciplinary cooperation in the project and strategic collaboration on a cognitive architecture for humanoid robots (10 %)
  • addressing and considering ethical aspects (e.g. sustainability, data protection) in the development of new technologies in the project (10 %)

Employment is conducive to academic qualification.

We offer

  • salary depending on personal skills/qualification up to Remuneration level 13 TV-L
  • fixed-term (2 years – with the option of extension until the end of the project (31.12.2027)) (§ 2 (1) sentence 1 of the WissZeitVG; in accordance with the provisions of the WissZeitVG and the Agreement on Satisfactory Conditions of Employment, the length of contract may differ in individual cases)
