Research Opportunities (Sarcoma Cancer Research) – Medical Oncology, Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri, USA

Published Date: 01-11-2023.

Position Summary

Sarcomas are a rare group of over 80 types of tumors of mesenchymal origin that can be divided
into 2 categories: soft tissue sarcomas (STS) and bone sarcomas. In 2018, the incidence of all
sarcomas was 15,000 patients, of which soft tissue sarcomas represented 80%. For high grade
non-metastatic soft tissue sarcomas, the standard of care treatment involves surgical excision,
chemotherapy, and adjuvant radiation. Despite this multimodality approach, the risk of relapse
remains high at 50%, with most of these representing metastatic failures. Identification of better
systemic treatments to prevent relapse are needed.

Our lab focus on the understanding of tumor metabolism, metabolism-tumor microenvironment
interactions, and mechanisms of treatment escape in sarcoma. The ultimate goal of our group
is the development of new targeted therapeutics to sarcoma and the improvement of current
cancer treatments.

In our laboratory, we utilize a variety of metabolomics, transcriptomics, proteomics, and
molecular biology techniques to elucidate the underlying biology of sarcoma and identify
therapeutically actionable targets in a highly supportive and collaborative environment. In this
pursuit, we make extensive use of both mouse models and primary tissues.
