Over 1 million people die every year from a serious fungal disease. One major cause of these diseases is the fungal pathogen Candida. Current treatment options are limited to a handful of drugs which are poorly tolerated and have increasing problems due to drug resistance. Biologics, such as monoclonal antibodies (mAbs), have revolutionised the treatment of other diseases. Dr Rudkin’s group are developing first-in-class antifungal mAbs to address the unmet need for safer antifungal drugs which are effective against drug-resistant infections. The current project originated from our fundamental research programme and now has major commercial potential with a goal to spinout a company, mycoBiologics, by the end of this grant funding period.
The post holders will be part of the Aberdeen Fungal Group and the wider Microbiology and Immunity Research Theme. The IMS and the AFG have all the essential facilities needed for the successful completion of this project, including microscopy, proteomics and flow cytometry (https://www.abdn.ac.uk/ims/facilities/index.php ).
Salary will be at the appropriate point on the Grade 6 scale, £37,099 – £44,263 per annum, pro rata and negotiable with placement according to qualifications and experience.
