Research Associate in Sensory Neuroscience: honeybee diseases, University of Konstanz, Germany, Europe

Reference No.: 2023/226. This 2-year position is available as of January 1st, 2024, or earlier by agreement. In principle, this position can be divided into two half-time positions.

The position is financed by a Human Frontiers Science Program grant, aiming at understanding how honeybees use olfaction to keep their hives free from diseases.

The University of Konstanz is one of eleven Universities of Excellence in Germany. Since 2007 it has been successful in the German Excellence Initiative and its follow-up programme, the Excellence Strategy.

The position is available within the Galizia Lab (http//neuro.uni.kn). We are an interdisciplinary team at the Neurobiology Department (www.neurobiology-konstanz.com) and the Centre for Advanced Study of Collective Behaviour and study the neural basis of olfactory coding in insects, notably in honeybees and in fruit flies. We use calcium imaging, electrophysiology, behavioural experiments, and computational simulations.

Your Responsibilities

  • Develop your own research agenda within the framework of the questions laid out in the grant
  • The research consists of behavioral experiments to study odor-preference in honeybees, and finding new substances involved in hygienic behavior
  • Brain imaging and calcium imaging are used to study how these odorants are encoded in the honeybee’s brain
  • Contribution to teaching in Neuroscience (Bachelor and Master level), and supervision of undergraduate students is welcome

Your Competencies

  • You should hold a Ph.D. and have a background in neurobiology and behavior of insects
  • Proficiency in a programming language, and in quantitative Biology
  • Strong written and oral communication skills in English
  • Applicants working on one or more of the following subject areas are particularly welcome: Insect olfaction and olfactory coding, optical imaging and microscopy, computational neuroscience
