The University of Delaware Carvel Research and Education Center serves as the experiment station and county extension office for southern Delaware in Sussex County. This facility provides the setting for applied research in many areas coupled with the dissemination of these results and additional information to Sussex County residents as well as to the state and region.
Under the general direction of the IPM Coordinator, the Research Associate II will assist with extension and applied research projects. The incumbent will join a USDA-NIFA Extension Implementation Program responsible for moving adoption of integrated pest management (IPM) forward to address economically important pest issues and directly supervise and coordinate field activities for 4-6 seasonal technicians.
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Assist with on-farm surveys of agronomic and vegetable pests, demonstration plots, coordinating field operations with partner-farmers.
- Provide supervision and direction to seasonal labor. Research conception, trial installation, plot maintenance, data collection and analysis are required core duties.
- Perform data entry, analysis, and summary for industry and research professionals.
- Prepare research data and present findings at local, regional, and professional meetings.
- Produce extension outreach materials, including but not limited to fact sheets and digital content.
- Maintain equipment inventory and field laboratory maintenance.
- Responsible for complying with university policies, procedures, and best practices regarding protecting data and following UD data governance rules.
- Perform other job-related duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Master’s degree in entomology, or related agricultural discipline and two years of farm experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Knowledge of crop production and pest management.
- Ability to understand, interpret and follow written and verbal instructions and procedures; requires excellent comprehension and communication in English.
- Knowledge of research methodology, principles, and procedures.
- Knowledge of the use and maintenance of laboratory facilities and/or equipment.
- Knowledge of scientific approaches and methodologies.
- Knowledge of current technological developments/trends in area of expertise.
- Skill in the use of personal computers and related software applications.
- Ability to investigate and analyze information and to draw conclusions.
- Ability to gather and analyze statistical data and generate reports.
- Ability to use independent judgment to develop model concepts and approaches for research.
- Ability to understand, follow, and enforce safety procedures.
- Ability to design, organize, and coordinate scientific and/or engineering research projects.
- Ability to develop and follow research methodology and protocol.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Must have an active driver’s license and be able to obtain a Delaware Pesticide Applicator’s License within 6 months of hire.
