Research Assistant/Research Fellow – 15669, Brunel University, London, UK

Last Date: 25/04/2024.

Brunel Innovation Centre (BIC) is looking for a Researcher with expertise in Power Ultrasonics and/or Sonochemistry to join our team in Cambridge. We are seeking to appoint a Research Assistant/ Research Fellow (dependent on experience) to deliver and lead our collaborative research projects.

BIC is a world class research and technology centre (established in 2009) that sits between the knowledge base and industry offering high quality research in an innovative environment; focused on non-destructive testing, condition and structural health monitoring, power ultrasonics and allied technologies. For more info on BIC, please visit www.brunel.ac.uk/bic. A collaboration between Brunel University London and TWI Ltd, BIC has been awarded funding (Innovate UK, EPSRC and H2020) to work with companies across Europe and UK in the energy, aerospace and construction & engineering sectors.

The post will involve work in the following fields:

  • To model and carry out computer-based simulations of power ultrasound transducers using software such as COMSOL, ANSYS, etc.
  • To conduct research on Power Ultrasonic and Sonochemistry applications.
  • To apply high power ultrasonics to house 3D printing concrete applications i.e. apply ultrasound to concrete, concrete pipes for de-clogging.
  • To apply high power ultrasonics to support material manufacturing processes i.e. welding, additive manufacturing and casting.
  • To apply high power ultrasonics for various other applications such as icing removal as well as medical applications such as ultrasonic therapy
  • Optimization of the Centre’s Power Ultrasonic system including ultrasonic transducers, signal generators and power amplifiers.

The role may also involve the application of high power ultrasonics for:

  • Material processing during manufacturing (i.e. composites, additive manufacturing).
  • 3D printing concrete applications

The successful candidate will have:

  • An undergraduate or graduate qualification in Electrical, Mechanical or any other similar background with specialization in areas such as Acoustics, ultrasound, structural health monitoring or equivalent
  • Evidence of sufficient knowledge in the above-mentioned discipline and of research methods.
  • Experience of the application of high-power sonication in research (simulations, hands-on, etc.).
  • Strong expertise in different modelling software related to application of Power Ultrasonics in different applications (additive manufacturing, 3D printing, etc).
  • Experience on Data acquisition and measurements of ultrasonic, vibration signals for inspection or/and monitoring.
  • Strong mathematical and theoretical background on vibrations and control, acoustics/ultrasonics
  • Experience delivering and ideally leading collaborative research projects (EPSRC, InnovateUK, H2020)
  • Good communication and presentation skills and the ability to draft research papers for publication in academic journals and/or combination of industrial experience and/or training.
  • A high level of initiative and an ability to work both collaboratively and independently. Team player and willingness to work on different projects.
  • Results-oriented approach, be self-driven with a positive outlook and a clear focus on high quality work.

Closing date for applications: 25 April 2024
