About the Role
The Research Assistant in Marine Predator Ecology will join a growing team of dedicated researchers that are undertaking at-sea movements and habitat-use studies of seabirds and fur seals in Bass Strait. This research is vital for understanding how wildlife interact with their environment and the potential impacts of offshore wind farm developments. The role involves considerable periods of field work on offshore islands along Victoria’s coastline which may require camping in the field.
The ideal candidate will have experience assisting research teams and experience with wildlife fieldwork. You will be able to work independently and have sound judgement to ensure research is successfully conducted. You will have a keen interest in Marine Ecology research and a willingness to learn and adapt to the field environment.
Your key responsibilities will include:
- Assist research academics through the capture and handling of seabirds and fur seals in the field for deployment and recovery of data logging devices.
- Extraction and processing of data from animal behaviour data loggers.
- Analysis of at-sea movement and behaviour data from seabirds and fur seals.
- Preparing ethics applications, internal and external reports, filing of reports including production of figures, tables and graphs, and assist with drafting papers for publication.
- Assist with maintaining relevant databases and manage the time available for the tasks.
To be successful, you’ll have:
- Bachelor’s degree in science (or equivalent)
- Experience of research in marine mammal and/or seabird ecology and foraging behaviour.
- Demonstrated skills working with wildlife in the field.
- Demonstrated skills in analysis of animal movement and behaviour data.
- Experience as a productive member of a research team

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
- Frequent travel (including camping) will be required for field work on offshore islands of Victoria’s coastline, including working outside of normal business hours
- A current Australian Bird and Bat Banding Scheme A Class banding permit, or the ability to acquire one.
- Driver’s Licence.
- Working with Children Check.
