Research Assistant, Department of Medicine, University of Calgary, Canada

Position Overview

The Department of Medicine in the Cumming School of Medicine invites applications for a Research Assistant. This Part-time Fixed Short-Term position is for approximately 3 months (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.

This position reports to the Principal Investgiator. 

The Research Assistant’s primary purpose is to assist the Principal Investigator and support the research team through providing semi-skilled or skilled research procedures.

This will specifically involve being present in the Rockyview General Hospital, Foothills Medical Centre and South Health Campus Emergency Department for 3 days per week (all weekdays). 

The research assistant’s job will be to identify emergency department patients potentially eligible for study participation. The research assistant would then approach the emergency department nurse and ask permission to introduce themselves and the study to the patient. If permission is obtained, the research assistant would complete the process of informed consent and collect baseline variables, as per the study data collection form. The research assistant will then complete follow up telephone call(s) and collect relevant data variables at that time.

Position Description

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

  • Under general supervision & direction of the PI, develop and implement original experiments within the guidelines of the research
  • Understand and implement basic research procedures with respect to informed consent, data collection and reporting
  • Work collaboratively with emergency department physicians, nurses and pharmacy team
  • Work collaboratively with Research Coordinator at Foothills Medical Centre
  • Be available by telephone and email while on shift/at work
  • Be comfortable in an emergency department environment
  • Establishes and maintains effective, productive relationships with staff, peers, immediate supervisor and senior management and with the campus community
  • Manages own time effectively and ensures immediate reports to manager is kept informed of activities, and progress of work
  • Demonstrated strong communication, team and customer service skills, and an ability to exercise judgment within established guidelines
  • Understanding of safety codes, standards, and systems related to specialization

Qualifications / Requirements:

  • Bachelors Degree in a related field
  • Specialized certification – TCPS 2 and GCP required
  • AHS Privacy Certificate
  • Recommend change to processes or procedures
  • Must be open to learning and development, and be willing to accept new challenges and assignments
  • Demonstrated strong communication, team and patient related skills, and an ability to exercise judgment within established guidelines
  • Intermediate to advanced skills in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint), Internet skills
  • A positive attitude and the ability to work independently and as part of a team are critical to success
