Description

The Institute of Human Origins (IHO) at Arizona State University is recruiting a Postdoctoral Research Scholar with a demonstrable research record in early hominin paleobiology. The postdoctoral research scholar will be contributing to a collaborative project studying mid-Pliocene hominin postcrania from Woranso-Mille (Ethiopia), with particular emphasis on comparative description and functional morphology.

Essential functions of the position include:

1.     Conduct research on the functional morphology of fossil hominin postcrania from Woranso-Mille, Ethiopia.

2.     Design research, develop methodology, analyze and write manuscripts for publication in peer-reviewed scientific journals.

3.     International travel to study original hominin fossil materials housed in various African and European museums.

4.     Work closely with Woranso-Mille project PI on imaging, curation and preparation of original fossil.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. degree in biological anthropology, biology, anatomy or other related field, or completed all of the requirements for a Ph.D. by the time of appointment.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of human osteology and comparative description of early hominin fossils.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of virtual anthropology.
  • Demonstrated commitment to working with faculty, staff, students and communities to advance the ASU Charter.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Good knowledge of analytical tools such as geometric morphometrics and other quantitative research methods.
  • Experience with software packages such as Avizo/Amira, ImageJ, or other similar software packages is also desired.
