The School of Culture, History and Language is the focus of research and teaching in Asian and Pacific humanities, social sciences and languages and seeks to build excellence in understanding and capability in engaging with the Asia and Pacific region. The key disciplines that are represented in the School are anthropology, archaeology, cultural studies, gender studies, history, linguistics, and languages, all contributing to the foundational knowledge of Asia and the Pacific.
The Opportunity
Join us at Australian National University for an exciting position funded by the Commonwealth of Australia. Research with a real-world impact: help communication systems on the ground in the Pacific.
This position is part of a collaborative project with the Defence Science and Technology Group that aims to compile enriched language resources for the three Pacific creole languages: Tok Pisin (PNG), Solomon Pijin (Solomon Islands) and Bislama (Vanuatu). One project aim is to develop automatic language processing tools for these languages, focusing on natural language processing and dependency parsing. They work as part of the research team, liaising with a wide range of stakeholders and providing assistance with the design and implementation of research directions.
The Research Fellow will be responsible for maintaining a high level of research, and will work with Department, School, College, and University colleagues to deliver key strategic outcomes in research, and is responsible for providing general support related to allocated research activities.
Our Ideal Candidate
Our ideal candidate will have a PhD or a related field with experience in linguistics or computer science (with language data experience). You will have demonstrated experience in computational linguistics with Python coding experience and familiarity with universal dependencies and dependency parsing. Previous experience working with one of the three Pacific Creoles is an advantage. To excel in this role, you will also have demonstrated effectiveness in working with indigenous communities and stakeholders in the Pacific region.
