PhD position in the field of “Ancient microbial genomics and infectious disease evolution”, University of Tübingen, Germany, Europe

The position will start as early as May 2024 for an initial period of three years and will be primarily supervised by Dr. Maria A. Spyrou. Salary will follow the German public service scale TV-L E13, 50% .

Applicants must hold a Master’s or equivalent degree in archaeological sciences, genetics, microbiology, biology, bioinformatics or a related field. The ideal applicant will have knowledge in molecular biology, microbial genetics and a genuine interest in human history. Previous experience in the analysis of next generation sequencing data is not a mandatory requirement but will be considered an advantage. In addition, the candidate should have good communication skills, in order to work in a highly collaborative and international environment, as well as very good command of written and spoken English. Knowledge of German is appreciated but is not a strict requirement. 

The successful applicant will work on an interdisciplinary project focusing on high-resolution ancient metagenomic analysis to investigate pathogen presence in prehistoric archaeological contexts. The project has recently been funded by the European Research Council (ERC Starting Grant PROTOPEST). The candidate will investigate ancient DNA from a range of human-associated microbes that contributed to past population health and disease, with aim to deepen our understanding of their evolutionary history and impact on prehistoric societies.
