PhD: Doctoral Researcher in Cell and Molecular Biology, University of Jyväskylä, Finland, Europe

Last Date: 31 January 2024.

Doctoral Researcher in n Cell and Molecular Biology, starting on 2 May 2024 or as agreed, for a maximum of 4 years.

The researcher will join the ERC-funded project The Life of Giant Phages lead by Elina Laanto. We study the yet undescribed, large-sized bacterial viruses, i.e. megaphages, using isolates that were recently obtained from freshwater environments. The giant phage collection will be also expanded during the project. Our research questions are focused on understanding the biology and ecology of these phages. Main aims in the project include characterization of the model system comprising the giant phage virion, genome, and host interactions. One of the aims is to detect whether the size of a virion correlates to its life history traits. Also, ecological implications and abundance of boreal large-sized phages will be studied using combined culture-based and ‘omics approaches.

The doctoral researcher is expected to contribute to the current project, plan and perform research, write manuscripts and finally a PhD thesis.

You are the person we are looking for if you have a master’s degree in the field of microbiology or a related discipline and a strong interest in phage biology. Experience in experimental work with phage-host interaction studies is preferred.  Previous experience in bioinformatics and microscopy can be an advantage. Good written and oral communication skills in English are required.

The duties, qualification requirements and language skills of a Doctoral Researcher are stipulated by the University of Jyväskylä Regulations and language skills guidelines. The MSc degree required for the position must have been completed before starting the position. Doctoral Researcher needs to be also enrolled in the doctoral programme which can be applied from the Faculty of Mathematics and Science after selection for the position.
