The above full-time, Wellcome Trust funded post is available from Feb 1st 2024 to Jan 31st 2027 in the University of Exeter, Penryn campus, Centre for Ecology and Conservation. Working hours can be flexible.

The post

The Faculty wishes to recruit a Graduate Research Assistant or Postdoctoral Research Associate to support the work of Mark A. Hanson. The successful applicant will undertake molecular biology experiments, as well as simple culturing of bacteria/fungi or isolation of insect viruses for Drosophila infection experiments. The applicant is also expected to contribute to lab stock and reagent management using the T1 system.

The post will include:

  • DNA/RNA extraction, RT-qPCR, and transcriptomics
  • DNA cloning (E. coli vectors using the Gateway system or Drosophila CRISPR/Cas9 tools) for transgene insertions, and also dsRNA synthesis
  • Protein isolation and western blot, using antibodies to monitor activation of proteins of interest
  • Drosophila fruit fly rearing and maintenance, including D. melanogaster genetics
  • Microbe culturing (Category 1-2) and insect virus use
  • Laboratory stock and reagent management and ordering using the T1 system
  • Generation, management, and analysis of data relating to the project

About you

The successful applicant will be able to present information on research progress and outcomes, communicate complex information, orally, in writing and electronically and prepare proposals and applications to external bodies.

Applicants will possess a relevant PhD for PDRA role or nearing completion, or possess an equivalent qualification/experience in a related field of study, and be able to demonstrate sufficient knowledge in the discipline and of research methods and techniques to work within established research programmes. Applicants will be able to perform basic molecular biology and insect infection lab protocols including some of RNA extraction, protein isolation, genetic cloning, insect care, microbe culturing, experiment planning, data collection and analysis, and laboratory stocking.
