Job summary
This role is for a Fellowship (Clinical Research Fellow in Implanted Cardiac Devices and Physiological Pacing Research) to undertake research in the field of Pacing Induced Cardiomyopathy. The successful candidate could come from a medical or allied medical background e.g. cardiac physiologist.
The aims of this research program are through collaboration with clinical teams across the country to:
-Improve the assessment and diagnosis of Pacing Induced Cardiomyopathy.
-Further our understanding of the mechanisms of Pacing Induced Cardiomyopathy and if these mechanisms can be reversed and by what means.
-Gain mechanistic insights on the contribution of both change in cardiac activation pattern and reverse remodelling to the development of Pacing Induced Cardiomyopathy.
The appointed Fellow, funded by Abbott Laboratories Ltd, will take a leading role in Clinical Research Trials funded by the British Heart Foundation and Heart Research UK run by our research team at the National Heart and Lung Institute.
These trials focus on determining the optimal pacing approach for patients with bradycardia pacing indications, understanding the mechanisms leading to a decline in cardiac function and patient quality of life. Determining the best approach to track change in clinical status of pacemaker recipients. Potentially exploring the role of genetics and novel biomarkers in predicting the development of cardiomyopathy in individuals. Exploring the symptomatic benefit of upgrading patients with chronic RV pacing and mild-moderate LV impairment, the feasibility of upgrading such patients and the safety of such upgrade procedures.
The post will offer excellent advanced research training and would attract a high-calibre individual who would become a major asset to this scientific and clinical field. Through research activity and experiential learning the Fellowship will advance the field of cardiac devices with linked improvements in health outcomes and care for patients.
Duties and responsibilities
You will gain advanced skills and understanding of CIED implant indications, novel pacing approaches, device programming and device optimisation approaches. Interested candidates will also gain experience in implant techniques.
You will undertake research in the field of Pacing Induced Cardiomyopathy. The aims of this research program are to collaborate with clinicians across the country to improve the assessment and diagnosis of Pacing Induced Cardiomyopathy. To further our understanding of the mechanisms of Pacing Induced Cardiomyopathy and in whom these mechanisms can be reversed and by what means.
You will support the running of the PROTECT-UP trial, which will include providing clinical supervision of investigations and collection of clinical data
Essential requirements
You should have a Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in biomedical / scientific field or medical field, and clinical experience with implantable cardiac devices including device programming, and follow-up
Ideally, you will have experience in the cardiac catheter laboratory, knowledge of pacemaker programming, general laboratory practice, technique and instrumentation.
