Position Description:

The Animal Health Laboratory at the University of Guelph invites applications for a contractually-limited position at the Assistant Veterinarian level.

This 1-year contractually-limited position in the Animal Health Laboratory (AHL) is responsible for the provision of diagnostic anatomic pathology interpretive and consultative services in order to support the diagnosis of disease in animals. Using expertise in diagnostic veterinary pathology, the successful candidate will conduct gross and histologic examinations of various species of domestic animals, including poultry; select and forward samples to various labs for testing; interpret ancillary test results; act as case coordinator and report findings to veterinarians, faculty, agriculture ministry staff, and/or federal authorities; provide consultative services to referring veterinarians; and act as an expert witness for legal or insurance cases. This position is covered by the terms and conditions of the Collective Agreement between the University and the University of Guelph Faculty Association (UGFA).

Requirements of the position include: DVM or equivalent; license to practice veterinary medicine in Ontario; advanced training in veterinary anatomic pathology; ACVP board certification in veterinary anatomic pathology; proficiency in conducting laboratory tests and identifying diseases, assessing results, and interpreting findings; sound knowledge of zoonoses and reportable diseases; excellent oral, written and interpersonal communication skills to convey scientific knowledge to a variety of colleagues and public audiences; organizational experience to plan work schedules, establish priorities; ability to interpret and apply provisions of the Occupational Health and Safety Act within a laboratory environment. Must be immunized against rabies.
