Research Associate, Division of Neuroscience, University of Sheffield, UK

Last Date: 10th October 2023.

Summary:
We have an exciting opportunity for a postdoctoral research associate to join the lab of Dr Ryan West at the Sheffield Institute for Translational Neuroscience (SITraN) working on the project “Mechanisms Underpinning Disease Heterogeneity in C9Orf72 Frontotemporal Dementia”. This Alzheimer’s Society funded interdisciplinary project will combine the study of novel Drosophila models, patient-derived cell models and patient tissues to explore mechanisms underpinning disease heterogeneity in Frontotemporal Dementia (FTD) and Motor Neuron Disease (MND) associated with C9Orf72 hexanucleotide expansion mutation.

The position will offer the opportunity to undertake a broad range of techniques including Drosophila
biology, biochemistry, FACS, ELISA, patient-derived cell culture, immunopanning, immunohistochemistry and microscopy. You will have a strong background in molecular and cell biology and experience in one or more of the techniques listed is desirable. However, training will be provided and the only pre-requisite is that the candidate should be highly motivated, independent, and willing to learn new techniques. You will join a vibrant, mid-sized lab comprised of postdocs, technicians and PhD students based at the Sheffield Institute for Translational Neuroscience (SITraN), a leading centre for the study of neurodegenerative diseases and drug-discovery. You will work closely with Dr West and other members of the lab providing weekly update reports both in one-to-one meetings and in group lab meetings. You will be encouraged to present data at
local seminar series and in both national/international conferences.

This project is part of Ryan’s Alzheimer’s Society Funded Dementia Research Leader Fellowship. As such you will work closely with Ryan to liase with the Alzheimer’s Society and the lay research network, hosting the lay network on a 6-12 month basis to keep them informed of the project. The West lab is currently supported by funding from a number of charities including the Alzheimer’s society, ARUK, MNDA and My Name’5 Doddie Foundation. As such there are numerous opportunities to engage on public and patient engagement.

We are particularly keen to support researchers with career development in line with the research development concordat and will actively support those keen on applying for career development fellowships.
Candidates are strongly advised to contact Ryan ([email protected]) to discuss the role, prior to applying.
We’re one of the best not-for-profit organisations to work for in the UK. The University’s Total Reward Package includes a competitive salary, a generous Pension Scheme and annual leave entitlement, as well as access to a range of learning and development courses to support your personal and professional development.
