About our team/Mō te tīma
The University of Otago, Wellington (UOW) provides health research and teaching in New Zealand’s capital city. It enjoys collaborative relationships with District Health Boards, local health service providers, multiple central and local government agencies such as the Ministry of Health and Wellington City Council, as well as other tertiary education providers such as Massey and Victoria University. It also has strong links with local iwi.
The Department of Public Health at the University of Otago, Wellington offers an undergraduate fourth year medical student module and a flexible range of postgraduate study programmes on-campus in Newtown, Wellington.
The role/Te mahi
As a Research Fellow in the Department of Public Health, you will be working on both of our expanding Housing and Cities research programmes for the NZ Centre for Sustainable Cities.
In particular, you will contribute to research in our current MBIE Endeavour funded programme, Public Housing and Urban Regeneration: maximising wellbeing.
Key tasks of the role include:
• Undertaking literature reviews.
• Writing and collaborating on grant proposals and publications.
• Summarising research reports for demonstration.
• Participating in the activities of the programme and the Department of Public Health as required.
• Research related tasks requested by centre directors as required.

Your skills and experience/Kā pūkeka me kā wheako
Successful candidates will have:
• A relevant PhD level qualification (Public Health, Social Sciences, Economics, Policy, other).
• Strong experience in research and leading publications.
• An ability to work productively within a team.
We are also looking for candidates with experience:
• Of housing research and grant writing.
• An understanding of Māori tikanga and Pacific peoples’ approaches to research.
• An understanding of Public Health in NZ.
• An understanding of NZ policies.

We have two, fixed term (until 30 September 2025), full time (1FTE) positions available, located in Wellington.
The salary range for a Research Fellow is $90,902 to $107,300.
