Job description

The Groningen Research Institute of Pharmacy (GRIP) is part of the Faculty of Science and Engineering (FSE) of the University of Groningen and works closely with the University Medical Center Groningen (UMCG). The pharmaceutical and medical research within GRIP is very multidisciplinary. It bridges the gap between clinical and biomedical sciences on the one hand and natural sciences such as chemistry and physics on the other. The interaction between pharmaceutical sciences and these disciplines offers excellent opportunities for groundbreaking research in preclinical and clinical research in various research groups such as Molecular Pharmacology, Drug Design, Pharmaceutical Analysis, Nanomedicine and Drug Targeting, Chemical and Pharmaceutical Biology.

Within the basic unit Nanomedicine & Drug Targeting (NDT), two important research themes within the drug development process are combined. The research focuses on creating new medicines based on innovative drug delivery constructs and nanocarriers and unraveling the uptake mechanisms of these constructs in target cells. The group’s activities focus on chronic inflammatory and fibrotic diseases and cancer. A new line of research will focus on synthesizing innovative cell-specific constructs. Cell cultures, tissue slices, experimental animal models and patient-derived tissues are used to achieve the main goals.

The analyst will work in the laboratories of the NDT basic unit under the leadership of Prof.dr. K. Poelstra and being part of the NDT department team. The new position focuses on synthesizing and in vitro testing of new constructs based on nanoparticles and/or proteins.

Taken:

• the chemical coupling of receptor ligands (peptides, sugars, or inorganic molecules) to proteins and drug carriers (liposomes, polymers or other nanoparticles) •
the analysis, characterization and purification of the synthesized products (NMR, WB, etc.)
• the culturing cells and applying several molecular biological techniques such as western blots, qPCR, FACS, etc. for testing constructs
• performing measurements and analyzes according to protocols as well as administratively processing, interpreting and reporting the results
• assisting and instructing bachelor’s and master’s students in Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences
• assisting PhD students with their research activities
• developing, implementing and validating new methods
• managing and maintaining assigned facilities such as laboratory rooms, equipment and stock
• contributing to the general organization of the NDT laboratory.

Job requirements

• a completed education (hlo or master’s) in the field of organic chemistry, bio-medical techniques or a related subject
• demonstrable experience with laboratory research, operating equipment and developing new methods
• good oral and written communication skills in English and in Dutch
• independent, flexible, initiative-rich, structured, solution-oriented
• suitable for working in an interdisciplinary, academic and international environment
• a team-oriented attitude.

Organization

Employment conditions

In accordance with the collective labor agreement for Dutch Universities, we offer:

• depending on education and experience, a salary of at least € 2,693 (scale 7) gross per month and/or a maximum of € 4,103 (scale 8) gross per month for full-time working hours • 8% holiday allowance and 8.3% end-of-year
bonus the annual gross income
• an appointment of 0.8-1.0 FTE for a period of one year. If suitability is proven, as evidenced by a positive assessment after one year, there is the prospect of an appointment for an indefinite period. There is a chance that the position can be temporarily or structurally expanded to 1.0 FTE.
