PostDoc research position in the project Implementing a FAIR data and workflow infrastructure, University of Freiburg, Germany, Europe

Last Date: 18.02.2024.

Description

The Cluster of Excellence livMatS develops completely novel, life-like materials systems that adapt autonomously to various environments and harvest clean energy from their surroundings. The intention of these purely technical – yet in a behavioral sense quasi-living – materials systems is to meet the demands of humans with regard to pioneering environmental and energy technologies. The societal relevance of autonomous systems and their sustainability will thus play an important role in their development. The research program of livMatS is characterized by highly interdisciplinary collaboration between researchers from a broad range of fields including engineering, chemistry, physics, biology, psychology, the humanities, and sustainability sciences.

livMatS intends to develop a knowledge graph bridging the different scientific subjects and start to enrich it by instantiating it with research data. Therefore this project aims to develop application ontologies together with domain experts:

  • meta data structure/models need to represent the different scientific subjects within livMatS
  • the hierarchy of materials, from the base material (chemistry, mechanisms) to the mesoscopic meta material structure (geometry, mechanical mechanisms) and the system level (e.g. functionality in a soft robot) need to be represented
  • application ontologies need to be developed and connect to research projects
  • relevant (meta) data schemas need to be implemented with the domain experts in Electronic Lab Notebooks (e.g. Chemotion, elabFTW) or Lab Information Systems (e.g. openBIS) and connected Services (e.g. OMERO)
  • FAIR workflows based on reusable research data, information and knowledge need to be set up so that automized data collection from machines and simulations can be implemented (low effort for users)
  • Workshops need to be developed (together with NFDI-MatWerk) to onboard students, PhDs, PostDocs and Senior Scientists, e.g. User/Data Journey

Candidate profile:

  • We expect a successfully completed university degree in the fields of information, natural, or engineering sciences. A PhD in engineering, material science, physics or adjacent fields is preferred.
  • You need to be ready to learn the use of large language models in the context of ontology development.
  • IT and programming skills are necessary, preferably with Python/Django, nginx, SQL, and containerization.
  • Knowledge of areas (and tools) such as ontologies, graph databases, Protégé, and SPARQL is advantageous.
  • Enjoyment of interdisciplinary work in the face of changing challenges in a currently forming environment.
  • Knowledge or initial experience in the application of agile working methods is advantageous.
  • Advanced English language skills, including technical matters (at least B2), for collaboration in our international team.
  • Teamwork is important to you; you enjoy networking and inspiring your environment with your ideas
