The Program
Great Minds. One Goal. Canada’s Success.
The NRC’s Postdoctoral Fellowship program offers PDFs access to unique world-class facilities and the opportunity to work alongside multi-disciplinary teams of expert researchers and technicians on projects of critical importance to Canada. PDFs will carry out research on innovative research projects, with opportunities for career development (publications and/or industry interaction).
PDFs will be offered appointments to the staff of the National Research Council on a term basis and will be offered salaries and benefits currently available to Research Officers. Salaries commensurate with experience are taxable and subject to other deductions. As a guide, the current annual PhD recruiting rate is $74,230. In addition PDFs will be allocated a travel fund to support their work.
Project Title
Optimized on-the-fly 3D profile laser heating.
Your Challenge
To condition a complex 3D substrate before a deposition process, what would be the best path for the laser to reach a profile with minimal gradients and minimal cycle time? Or, to minimize distortion and residual stresses in surface treatment or welding, what toolpath and sequence should be followed? Those are two examples that could be answered at the end of this project. The hardware and numerical tools needed to find those optimal paths are already available at NRC. The missing link is a versatile integration software for tool motion generation that factors hardware and numerical simulations of the process.
The goal of this project is to create a new dedicated digital framework and demonstrate its disruptive potential through an experimental validation. The selected case study is on-the-fly (continuous robot-galvanometer movement) laser heating of a complex surface. The selected candidate will work on all aspects of the project: software framework development, toolpath generation, simulations with NRC’s finite element solver, optimization and robotic controllers programming. The final assessment will be completed on an experimental setup available at NRC Saguenay that includes a galvanometer scanner with a 10kW laser.
