Position Overview
The Department of Computer Science in the Faculty of Science invites applications for a Research Associate. This Fixed Term Recurring Part-time position is for approximately 10 months (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.
This position reports to the Principal Investigator of the project ‘Optimized Scheduling Recommendation Software’ within the Computer Science department. The position involves guiding the development of a web and mobile application for scheduling employees, to be integrated with an existing time tracking and payroll system. This application aims to help small business owners schedule their employees efficiently and effectively. Through optimization, new automation methods are achieved by efficient data collection and artificial intelligence algorithms, to minimize user efforts. On the frontend, the web interface must also be optimized for the most comfortable and streamlined user experience for the administrators, and the mobile interface similarly must be optimized for the employees to view their schedules and request time off.
The work will typically be carried out within normal working hours, with occasional overtime depending on the workflow. As an expert in the specialized area, the Research Associate plays a critical role in leading the application development, as well as designing and developing the machine learning models. The Research Associate will work closely with the Principal Investigator to lead the development team and to deliver the project.
Position Description
Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):
- Along with the Principal Investigator, develop and implement the strategic vision of the web application and the needed machine learning models
- Take responsibility for successful completion of the project from the conception stage through project closure
- Act as a liaison between the research team and collaborators
- Monitor and control the progress of the project development, quality, and risk by the research team
- Participate in making high risk decisions that may impact the scope, budget, and schedule of the project.
- Full responsibility for quality control
- Participate in high level research strategy sessions
- Develop operating procedures and make recommendations on workflow improvements
- Responsible for managing feedback from clients during testing
- Mentor the research team members
Qualifications / Requirements:
- BSc in computer science is required
- Minimum 2 years of experience working in Canadian FinTech web development and system design is required
- Minimum 2 years of experience working with startup companies is required
- Extensive experience in the web industry and entrepreneurship is required
- Demonstrated expertise in PHP and JavaScript, especially the Laravel framework
- Demonstrated expertise in cloud computing
- Demonstrated expertise in the design and implementation of databases
- Demonstrated ability to conduct work in artificial intelligence, algorithms and system architecture
- Demonstrated ability to liaise and work collaboratively with colleagues in a startup environment
- Demonstrated experience leading the implementation of new features to be released in a commercial FinTech product
- Demonstrated ability to write clearly and succinctly
