Postdoctoral Research Fellow within space physics, University of Bergen, Norway, Europe

Last Date: 7th January 2024.

About the project/work tasks:

The goal of the DynaMIT project is to understand and explain how Earth’s atmosphere is dynamically coupled to space. To achieve this, we will create a new simulation code based on a first-principles dynamic fluid description of the interaction between space plasma, the neutral atmosphere, and electromagnetic fields, and use the model in connection with novel observations and data analysis techniques. We are seeking a skilled space physicist and specialist in inverse problems with experience from advanced data analysis related to ionospheric electrodynamics. The candidate will help further develop the “Local mapping of polar ionospheric electrodynamics” technique and have an active part in NASA’s Electrojet Zeeman Imaging Explorer satellite mission.

This is a unique opportunity to work on a challenging and cutting-edge project that will advance our understanding of how Earth’s atmosphere is coupled with space. If you are passionate about quantitative and comprehensive data analysis and are committed to producing high-quality results, we encourage you to apply for this position.

Qualifications and personal qualities:

  • Applicants must hold a Norwegian PhD or an equivalent degree within space physics. PhD students may apply if the doctoral thesis is submitted for assessment prior to the application deadline. It is a condition of employment that the PhD has been awarded.
  • The candidate must have excellent knowledge within ionospheric physics.
  • The candidate must have excellent knowledge within inverse problems.
  • The candidate must have excellent skills in Python.
  • Experience from advanced data analysis techniques related to ionospheric physics, or knowledge about spherical harmonic analysis, spherical elementary current systems, or similar techniques, is a requirement.
  • Experience working with the analysis of ground magnetometer data is an advantage.
  • Applicants must be able to work independently and in a structured manner, and have the ability to cooperate with others.
  • Applicants must have excellent skills in oral and written English.

Personal and relational qualities will be emphasized. Research experience, ambitions and potential will also count when evaluating the candidates.
