Post-doc: Promoting sustainable behaviours to reduce plastics pollution (V23.0809), University of Groningen, Netherlands, Europe

Last Date: 2 January 2024.

Job description

The Sustainable Entrepreneurship in a Circular Economy (SECE) Department at the University of Groningen invites applications for a temporary post-doctoral researcher position (18 months 0,8 – 1,0 FTE) as part of a ZonMw-funded project.

The project

Plastic has become omnipresent in our environment, infiltrating landscapes, waterways, even our food and the air we breath, posing a pervasive and enduring threat to the ecosystems and our health. Everyday actions play an important role in this issue: from buying behaviour to food choices. The aim of the project is to understand citizens’ current perception on plastic pollution and microplastics, to find effective ways for communicating recent scientific discoveries in this field and stimulating the adoption of sustainable behaviours. Core to this project is to find innovative and creative strategies to involve the general public on the issue, for example via the use of videos, games, exhibits or arts.

As part of this project, the successful candidate will get the chance to design studies from the outset in close collaboration with other team members, with the aim of better understanding public perception on plastic pollution and microplastics as well as key drivers for behaviour change. Furthermore, the successful candidate will have the unique opportunity to closely collaborate with technicians and designers to translate these insights into gamification strategies to raise awareness about plastic pollution and microplastics and to promote the adoption of sustainable behaviours. A research assistant is hired to support the candidate with these activities. The postdoc will also have the chance to publish their work in international scientific journals. The successful candidate will work in an interdisciplinary group of researchers from Psychology, Communication Science and Immunology from different faculties and will get the chance to broaden their network with relevant researchers and partners in this field. To increase our impact on society, the project team will closely collaborate with a group of stakeholders, namely representatives from institutions, companies, research institutes, citizens’ organisations and the creative sector. Remote working is possible during some phases of the project or on certain days per week.

You will work at the university’s newest faculty, Campus Fryslân, located in the picturesque capital of Fryslân, Leeuwarden (the European Capital of Culture in 2018). The faculty is interdisciplinary, with the primary focus on promoting sustainability. Within Campus Fryslan, you will be primarily working in the ‘Sustainable Entrepreneurship in a Circular Economy’(SECE) Department. The Department is intrinsically motivated to make sustainable entrepreneurship and the transition to a circular economy successful (www.rug.nl/cf/cse).
