The Photo-e-Microbes project (funder: Novo Nordisk Foundation, principal investigator: Dr Laura Wey, project duration: October 2023 – September 2026) at the Molecular Plant Biology unit, Department of Life Technologies, University of Turku is looking for a Trainee or a Research Assistant to study exoelectrogenesis of photosynthetic microorganisms. Exoelectrogenesis is the process whereby cells release electrons to their external environment under illumination. We are studying the biological mechanism of exoelectrogenesis and how it relates to intracellular electron sinks.
Typical research tasks include preparation of buffers and growth media, sterilisation of equipment, cyanobacterial cell culture, data entry. Also exoelectrogenesis and photosynthesis spectroscopy measurements depending on experience and progress.
The position is suitable for example for a student of plant sciences, microbiology, biochemistry, molecular biology, or related fields.
The working language is English.
Required basic skills
Practical and theoretical knowledge of microbiology (i.e. sterile technique, cell culture), molecular biology (e.g. pipetting), and biochemistry (e.g. preparing solutions).
Experience with cyanobacteria, photosynthesis and electrochemistry is considered a plus.
Duration and salary
Part-time position: 20-50 % of full time as suitable for the candidate.
Working hours can be flexible, e.g. Monday and Tuesday mornings, Thursday and Friday mornings.
The starting date is either 4.12.2023 or 15.1.2024. Duration of the position is 2-4 months and will be specified in the interview. Depending on the development of the project there is a possibility of additional future work.
The salary for 100% monthly working time will be 1331–2181 EUR/month depending on the study progress and competence of the selected person.
